Subdermal Implants
There
are several other forms of chemical control over reproduction in
women. These include subdermal implants, such as Norplant, that
deliver small constant doses of a synthetic hormone. Typically, six
match stick sized capsules are implanted under the skin and they are
effective for approximately five years. As you learn about subdermal
implants, think of these questions:
- What is the mode of action of subdermal
implants in preventing pregnancy?
- What is the fundamental difference between the
mode of action of an oral contraceptive and a subdermal implant?
- What effect does this difference have on the
overall effectiveness, in terms of percent of women experiencing
an accidental pregnancy?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of a
subdermal implant compared to an oral contraceptive?
- Subdermal implants have been court ordered to
control the procreational activity of women or as a condition to
receive government benefits. What is your reaction to this use of
subdermal implants?
- What is the cost of a subdermal implant and
how does this compare to the cost of using oral contraceptives
over the span of five years?
- The manufacturers of Norplant are being sued.
Why?
Another form of birth
control for women involves injections.
